Director's Corner

by TIM HARRIS

Last week, more than 450 people joined us at the Westin Ballroom to celebrate 13 years of Real Change.

We raised more than $60,000, making this the most successful Real Change event ever. The community turned out in force to support our critically important work, and to celebrate our Change Agent of the Year award recipient for “visionary organizing and exceptional effectiveness,” Jon Gould of the Children’s Alliance.

As the Real Change community grows, so does our ability to make the changes we so desperately need in Seattle. Real Change, with its broad base of grassroots support and socially entrepreneurial nonprofit business model, has the freedom to get out in front of the advocacy community and challenge government, philanthropy, and our allies in the human services and faith communities to look more deeply at the problems of poverty and growing inequality in Seattle and work toward solutions that challenge business as usual.

This week, we held our first organizing meeting to frame the operating principles of a new grassroots effort that will take action on housing affordability, growing inequality, and the erosion of civil rights for the poor. The project will bring our vendors and other low-income people together with our readers and other allies to strategize and take action. Our efforts are part of a growing movement in this country that is challenging poverty and inequality by building power from the bottom up.
