After 10 years as a Seattle City Councilmember, Peter Steinbrueck left office on Fri., Dec. 21. He allowed me to document his final day - from a 6:15 a.m. radio interview to a workout at the gym to an early morning bus ride to work from his North Seattle home. He spent most of the day packing his office. The day was filled with distributing key documents to fellow councilmembers, sifting through zoning maps, boxing up awards of every shape and size, and reminiscing about long-lost finds — among them, an essay he wrote in seventh grade about his experience working in a stall at Pike Place Market.

As 5 p.m neared, file cabinets had been emptied and desk drawers cleared, but some of his most treasured items — various diplomas, public service awards, his father’s T square from architecture school — remained on the wall. They would be the last to go. Because once they were removed, “then it’s really over,” he said.
