Thanks to you, Real Change is heading into 2008 strong and ready to take on the challenges ahead. Our winter fund drive was an astonishing success. With all donations over November and December in and tallied up, we raised $110,296, beating our goal of $90,000 by 22 percent.
This is remarkable.
Your support offers us more than just the money we need to continue. It is an affirmation that we are on the right track, and strongly embraced by the community we serve.
I have always believed that if we do our part, the money we need to support the work will follow. Doing our part means producing a quality newspaper that is timely, activist, and unafraid. It means taking a courageous organizing stance, and holding power accountable. And it means putting the needs and success of the vendors front and center.
As Real Change prepared to launch weekly publication three years ago, our research showed that most people considered this newspaper a charity buy. We took this information to heart. The path of greatest success for the vendors, we decided, was to lead with the quality and courage of our content. Over 2007, we recorded a 16 percent circulation increase, our largest ever.
More recently, our focus is on organizing. Real Change is uniquely situated to bring people together across class lines to organize for the structural change we desperately need. The new Real Change Organizing Project is off to a running start, and is building power on issues of housing affordability, growing inequality, and human and civil rights.
These are not normal times, and we are all called upon to rise to the occasion as we can. We’re ready for what comes next. Thank you for your support. It makes all the difference. |
