Ask Eva Walker, 18, what she wants to be when she grows up and she’ll tell you, “To be a successful musician who can win the Nobel Peace Prize.”
Already, she seems well on her way to attaining both goals.
When she was 16, she produced her very first fundraising concert for a family of eight made homeless by Hurricane Katrina. Walker persuaded local musicians to perform, collecting $550 for the family’s move to Seattle.
At 17, her yearlong senior project benefited Urgent Africa, a non-profit that raises money for the education and health of African youth. Again, she tapped local performers for a concert, while she put together a slideshow. The event brought in $2,500.
Last fall, she produced the opening youth rally for Seattle’s Oct. 27 march and protest against the Iraq War. Walker invited former Seattle Black Panther member Michael Dixon to speak, along with having a bevy of musicians. Then she helped lead the protest.
As to being a musician, she already plays drums and guitar and she’s learning piano. Plus, she’s working on a musical project with Tina Hendrix, niece of Jimi. All of which hasn’t distracted her from her larger goal: “To try to spread peace as much as I can.”
