Equity comes to Kent |

The King County Council is bringing its new Equity and Social Justice Initiative on the road. On March 24 the initiative, designed to foster equal access to education,
basic health care, livable wages, a healthy environment, and safe, affordable housing, was brought to the Kent Senior Activity Center, where county director of environmental health services Ngozi Oleru explained the basic ways in which the Equity and Social Justice Initiative will be applied. The Council will more carefully consider whether actions it takes in funding
programs in everything from arts to transportation will reach all communities or just those with higher incomes. And, said Oleru, the two-month old program is still working on more specific plans. One of their challenges is funding: county staff are seeking grants rather than relying on county money, but as the initiative gains momentum they hope that the county will shift some funds their way.
The next King County Town Hall, on the subject of the county’s animal shelters, will occur April 14 at Highland Arts Center.
