Sixty dollars can mean the difference between having power this month and living in the dark. It’s sometimes those last few bucks that can keep your door clear of an eviction notice.
The University Churches Emergency Fund fights homelessness by giving small amounts of money — generally $50 to $100 — to those who need it to make ends meet. In her four years as Chair of the Committee at UCEF, Melissa Macbeth has increased the sustainability of the organization through publicity and fundraising. While many non-profits jerk open and closed with the tides of grant money, UCEF has stayed solidly afloat and open, in part due to Macbeth’s efforts. The organization aids about 1,500 north Seattle residents every year.
Macbeth says that clients often return the love: “Years later we receive letters of thanks and sometimes a check paying us back,” she says. “People are really thankful for what we do for them and that makes me proud.”
