Real Change is looking for responsible, committed people to help us fulfill our mission of organizing, educating, and building alliances to create solutions to homelessness and poverty. We exist to provide a voice to poor people in our community, and rely on volunteers and interns to keep the paper and our other programs operational.

Currently Hiring:
Editor

The Editor is a full-time exempt position reporting to the Managing Director. This position is responsible for the development and oversight of Real Change, a progressive, community newspaper with a weekly circulation of 12,000-16,000. This position involves setting and maintaining an editorial direction that is consistent with the Real Change mission and strategic goals, producing a high quality paper of mostly original content every week, using social and digital media to build awareness of Real Change, supervising newspaper staff and volunteers, acting as a liaison with community supporters and other departments at Real Change. The Editor serves on Real Change’s Senior Management team.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities:


1. Production of Weekly Paper (50%)

a. Identify content

  • Develop stories and plan issues

  • Follow local news trends as they relate to priority issues

  • Work with reporters and volunteers to craft ideas and pitches

    b. Assign Stories

  • Assign weekly stories to staff, volunteers, intern and self

  • Ensure effective management of guest editorials, poetry, letters, and other unsolicited submissions and respond as necessary to authors

  • Incorporate feedback and evaluate story pitches from Editorial Committee, a volunteer body of homeless and low-income people

  • Delegate boilerplate material (e.g. calendar, crossword puzzle) to volunteers, and cultivate a broad base of volunteer reporters and reviewers

  • Contribute news stories, as needed

    c. Edit Copy

  • Edit articles and columns

  • Develop headlines

  • Review overall layout and design of paper

    d. Manage Logistics

  • Develop production schedule with appropriate deadlines

  • Support production staff to ensure timely weekly production of the newspaper, performing production tasks as needed

  • Place weekly orders with printer

  • Archive 10 copies of each paper

    2. Newsroom Management and Administration(20%)

  • Set departmental goals and engage in long-term planning of special issues and events

  • Provide direct supervision of all editorial staff, including weekly one-on-one meetings and annual performance evaluations

  • Oversee editorial internship program

  • Design and convene annual departmental retreat

  • Develop and manage departmental budget

    3. Social and Digital Media (10%)

  • Work with Communications Specialist to post new content and relevant articles to Real Change website and social media outlets, namely Facebook and Twitter

  • Partner with other departments to ensure proper on-line messaging and relevancy

    4. Community Relations (10%)

  • Serve as a public face of Real Change and represent the organization at special events

  • Create and maintain a variety of media relationships that actively promote Real Change as a quality source of news and opinion

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with individuals, community organizations, publishers, and other media

  • Participate in industry-associations (e.g. SPJ)

    5. Interdepartmental Activities (10%)

  • Take lead on integrating editorial department with other functions at Real
    Change

  • Participate executing RC’s strategic planning goals and objectives

  • Represent editorial department as member of RC Senior Leadership team

  • Attend staff meetings

  • Serve on at least one cross-departmental committee each year

    Qualifications include:

  • Minimum three years’ experience working in a newsroom

  • Demonstrated passion for and commitment to social and economic justice

  • Prior experience with supervision and management

  • Team player who can work effectively across departments

  • Strong organizational skills and comfort with working in a deadline-driven environment

  • Familiarity with production programs (InDesign, InCopy, Photoshop)

    Compensation:

    Salary Range $42,500-$50,000 DOE. Excellent benefit package, including three weeks paid vacation, medical, dental and vision coverage, subsidized ORCA pass, and a $600 per Full Time Equivalent annual professional development budget.

    Staff Reporter

    The Staff Reporter is a part-time, 24 hours per week, nonexempt position reporting to the Editor of Real Change, a progressive, community newspaper with a weekly circulation of 12,000-16,000. This position helps to ensure continuous high-quality community journalism in the newspaper.

    Primary Roles and Responsibilities:


    Reporting (50%)

  • Work with the editor to identify stories and plan coverage

  • Gather news using contacts, sources, personal interviews, wire services, news briefings and/or press releases

  • Compile data and write stories and briefs

  • Take photos to supplement news stories, as needed

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with individuals, community organizations, publishers and other media

    Writing (40%)

  • Produce one story of at least 500 words and one brief on a weekly basis (The editor will make exceptions to allow work on longer pieces or as needed)

  • Editing, copy editing, or production duties, as needed

  • Other reasonably related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as required

    General Office Duties (10%)

  • Archive all story research and articles

  • Represent Real Change at special events

  • Attend weekly staff meetings and quarterly staff trainings

    Qualifications include:

  • Minimum of one year of experience as a working journalist

  • Passionate commitment to economic justice and Real Change’s mission

  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines

  • Outstanding written and interpersonal communication skills

  • Strong inquisitive and critical thinking skills

  • Ability to work productively in a dynamic environment

    Compensation:

    Hourly Wage $15-17 DOE. Benefit package includes paid vacation and sick time, subsidized ORCA pass, and an annual professional development budget.
