Global Voices: Do you believe the levels of surveillance in your country are justified and why?

via: ©Street News Service

Name: Malcolm Sinclair Age: 72 Occupation: Retired City of residence: Glasgow, Scotland “I don’t believe the level of surveillance in Scotland is justified. We have security cameras everywhere, yet the police often dismiss their use. Often when a crime is reported the police say they do not have the time or resources to analyze the video footage from the cameras, which completely defeats their supposed purpose.”

Name: Jennifer Smith Age: 35 Occupation: Graduate student in education City of residence: Seattle “Levels of surveillance are unjust and are forcing us to redefine privacy. We need to limit the availability of personal information now, or our children will grow up in a society where invasion of privacy is a dangerous norm.”

Name: Alice Klauser Age: 28 Occupation: Doctor City of residence: Durban, South Africa “I think what little surveillance we have in South Africa acts as a deterrent. However the sheer scale of violent crime means that overall, in terms of crime prevention, it is not effective and I would like to see more.”

Name: Taras Pilat Age: 26 Occupation: Computer engineer City of residence: Lviv city, Ukraine “I think that the level of surveillance in Ukraine is justified as it decreases the number of offenses. However our police patrol often use security cameras, so they can sit in the car and watch without too much effort.”
