Campout for bus tickets
On or around July 11, SHARE says it’s going to run out of money to buy bus tickets for the 500 homeless people who stay in its tent cities and shelters and depend on Metro to get around. When that happens, the organization said last week in an email to supporters, it plans to take direct action: On an unspecified day after the bus tickets run out, they’ll board Metro buses in an attempt to ride for free. After that, they’re asking for supporters to drive them to the mayor’s house, where they plan to sleep out front on the sidewalk. They will continue the effort every night in front of a different Seattle official’s home, they say, until someone comes up with $50,000 for bus tickets.
The group has been asking the city for the money since last fall, when it flagged the City Council that it would be facing a $50,000 shortfall. “Unfortunately,” the SHARE email states, “all of our continued pleas to the city have consistently fallen on [the] deaf ears of our local city politicians.” The group is asking any vehicle owners willing to drive to call (206) 448-7889.
