Just Heard
Back from the brink
Efforts to save the Tenants Union of Washington appear to be paying off: In a July 9 post on its fund-raising Facebook page, the 32-year-old organization reported it had raised $17,500. But when the mail was opened that day, staff found an anonymous $25,000 donation. Together, those totals surpassed the $25,000 needed to keep its doors open past July 16.
“Thank you, whoever you are — for your gift, your faith, and your commitment,” the Tenants Union says in the post.
The organization, which lost county funding June 30, needs about $50,000 to make it through the year. It is now operating without its acting executive director. Two part-time staff members remain, with volunteers being sought to continue the tenant hotline.
