The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled July 8 that a pharmacist cannot withhold Plan B emergency contraception on “moral” grounds — a major victory for women in Washington state. Legal Voice, the advocacy group that argued Stormans et al. v. Selecky et al., says the court was clear that pharmacists must follow regulations requiring them to dispense all lawful medication.

The case started in 2007 when Rhiannon Andreini went to a pharmacy to purchase Plan B. The pharmacist not only refused to give her the medication, but lectured her about it after she had driven 70 miles to the pharmacy.

“[This] ruling,” Legal Voice says in a news release, “will ensure that neither Rhiannon, nor any woman, will have to make that trip again.”
