Earlier this year in Houston, Texas, the viral marketing expert Kevin Dolan and his son Sean had an idea to help the homeless: select and focus on one individual, offer them assistance and then, with their co-operation and consent, record their story for a new website. Surmising that a site called “Help this homeless person” would not grab enough attention, the Dolans hit upon the deliberately provocative Pimp This Bum, an homage to the popular MTV series “Pimp My Ride.” They approached Tim Edwards, homeless for five years and living under a bridge. He was amused by their plan, and since February, Tim’s progress has been broadcast on the website. Thus far almost two million people worldwide have watched Edwards’s journey from the streets to stability. In its short life, Pimp This Bum has given a graphic and detailed account of what it’s like to be homeless, dispelling some of the many negative stereotypes in the process. Tim Edwards has given a face to the plight of the homeless guy and, thanks to the help of Kevin and Sean Dolan, proven that the homeless are not a homogenous group.
