Nickelsville gets a pass
Port of Seattle Commissioner Gael Tarleton not only sat in on an Aug. 20 meeting to discuss letting Nickelsville stay at the port’s Terminal 107 Park, she agreed to put the proposal up for a full commission vote, possibly this week.
Tarleton met with residents of the tent city, state Speaker of the House Frank Chopp, the Church Council’s Michael Ramos and others working on the proposal, which calls for Nickelsville to remain at the park for three months, providing the city of Seattle grants a temporary use permit for the site. The homeless campers moved to the park July 23 without permission and had been warned the port would evict them Aug. 21 – a move that appears on hold.
At the meeting, Chopp reportedly tried to seal the deal by offering to introduce legislation that would make it clear the port has a legal right to loan out the park to the homeless — removing an argument that port officials have used to insist the tent city must go.
