Hidden homeless on the rise in the UK
Most tend to think of the homeless as those sleeping on the streets. However, another homeless group that is not so visible is often overlooked. People who live in hostels, temporary accommodation or on the floors and spare couches of their friends and family have come to be known as the “hidden homeless.” Although such scenarios were commonplace in the United Kingdom before the economic recession, recent figures released by the homeless charity, Crisis, have revealed that there are now as many as 400,000 people, in one sense or another, homeless within the UK. According to Crisis Chief Executive Leslie Morphy, “People don’t recognize homelessness as a serious problem. Yet if this issue is not confronted, as the economic situation worsens, many more people will inevitably be added to the already sizeable figures of hidden homelessness.”
