Dear Editor,

Your March 3-9 issue’s cover story had to do with the city’s proposed panhandling restrictions.

A photo shows two young, clean-cut appearing women who appear not only well educated, but not damaged by alcohol or drugs.

To digress a bit, a buddy and I worked our way around the western portion of our country some while ago by washing dishes, bussing tables, etc. We did not demean ourselves by asking strangers to hand out money; we had more self-respect.
Such jobs are always available with the employers realizing that many or most of the dishwashers are not going to last very long and like us, living out of a car or on the ground.

The cover photo shows one of the two begging and holding the usual cardboard sign and is captioned by Real Change “Criminal?”; I’d say: Freeloader.

They ask for unearned money which might have been given to a panhandler who is out of work due to alcoholism, mental illness, etc. who truly needs a hand out.

SHAME ON THOSE TWO!

Martin Paup
