Detroit’s giants, who watched the advent of Congress’ Thanksgiving recess without landing a bailout, might want to take note: Voters want them to pay, not get paid.
As the election results came in on the night of Nov. 4, pollster Douglas E. Schoen asked American voters what form an economic recovery plan ought to take — and found public opinion turning green.
The poll results, released Nov. 11 by the Environmental Defense Fund, show a two-thirds majority of the electorate wants polluting companies to pony up tax money for any economic stimulus.
Fifty-eight percent of those polled favored “investments in new, clean energy” as a jobs-creation program; half agreed with the statement that “our oil addiction and our economic problems are related,” and 77 percent also said they’d be willing to pay $5 more per month in their power bills as a result of Congressional laws that cut oil imports and beat back emissions.
