The Seattle City Council is considering Mayor Greg Nickels’ proposal to deter gang membership with a new Youth Violence Initiative at a cost of $9 million over the next two years — and being asked to cut existing street outreach programs, such as Rainier Beach’s CURB, to pay for the initiative.
The cut came as a surprise to CURB case manager Nature Carter, who told the council so at an Oct. 27 budget hearing. “I thought the $9 million was new money. I didn’t know that the money was going to be directed from other services,” she says. “I was bamboozled.”
