NAFTA to CAFTA: Next Verse Just as Worse
Issue: The Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) affects trade and investment among the United States, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. President Bush is requesting that the U.S. Congress approve CAFTA before the July 4 recess. Congress must ratify CAFTA in an “up or down” vote because under current law, no amendments can be considered as part of international trade agreements.
