Dear Real Change,
Reverend Rich Lang’s essay “Lest We Forget” (May 23-29) falls down in the final paragraph. The unqualified phrase, “How do we pray for the defeat of our nation?” is unnecessary to his argument, and will likely lose many of the very readers that he had brought along all the way up to that point. The trick will be, and is, to bridge the gap between where we are now and where we want to be. Here and elsewhere, Lang consistently fails to do that — he asks everyone to leap a great abyss, and fails repeatedly to begin the process of building the necessary bridge that will actually get us to where he bravely believes we should be. Until he — until we — can imagine a practical, hard-headed bridge building, our goals will remain unfulfillable, unredeemable. Like our country. Like Christianity.
