Real Change is a real gift to the community, providing a prophetic insight into the many problems, some critical, in Seattle/King County.
I look forward to each week's issue and read it cover to cover. While I am grateful for the coverage that keeps me aware of the full spectrum of the positive and negative in beautiful Seattle, sometimes it leaves me sad and discouraged. So, hats off to the many dedicated activists who put themselves on the line every day to effect change and progress! And to the dedicated public servants who spend their days and nights providing services to the poor and the needy!
So today, I'd like to ask you: Have you stopped to smell the flowers? Have you walked under the cherry blossoms highlighted against the clear blue sky? Have you smiled at the bloom of daffodils, hellebores, euphorbia and rhodies? Have you been stopped in your tracks by the shock of color in the front yard gardens that proliferate throughout the city? Have you become breathless in a walk through the Arboretum? Have you enjoyed a walking meditation through the arbors of trees and landscapes, with nowhere to go but into the present moment?
Thich Nhat Hanh, the Zen Buddhist teacher, says: "The miracle is not to walk on water or in the air. The miracle is to walk on the earth!" Our city is a beautiful place to walk on the earth and smell the flowers!
