Thanks to volunteers at Google who developed the technology, Real Change customers can now download an app that allows them, for $2.99, to make cash-free purchases of the digital version of the paper from Real Change vendors. Vendors receive $1.49 of this. The new app was demonstrated at a press conference in Occidental Park on April 16. Once the app is downloaded, readers just scan the QR code on a vendor’s badge. Top photo, vendor Shelly Cohen has his badge scanned. Right, Cohen, Google’s Jill Woelfer and King County Councilmember Joe McDermott show the digital version of the paper that customers will receive after scanning the code. Far right, Google’s app developer, Srini Visvanathan, shows Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant how the app works. Currently the Android version is available; the iOS version will be up and running soon.
