The Executive Director (“ED”) will have the unique opportunity to help develop and implement a clear and impactful strategic plan that shapes the future of Real Change. To do so, the ED will collaborate with the Board of Directors and staff in shared leadership and trust. In this position, the ED will effectively communicate our story and mission to others, grow our digital presence, advance Real Change’s commitment to being an anti-racist and just organization, and build upon our community partnerships and networks of support.
It is essential that the ED cooperatively builds and communicates a clear and compelling vision and plan for the future of Real Change. In doing so, the next ED will empower staff growth and decision-making to fulfill our mission.
Primary Roles and Responsibilities
Strategic Vision for Programming and Growth
- Oversee, evaluate, and help develop Real Change programs and services; align all organizational programs and departments with one another to ensure the best delivery of our mission, with input from vendors and staff.
- Prioritize a vendor-centric model of operation.
- Assist in and oversee developing and implementing a strategic plan that reflects the organization’s priorities, guiding long-term progress and monitoring annually.
- Attend all monthly board meetings and at least one committee meeting per month.
- Prioritize internal strategies to advance organizational anti-oppression work.
Fundraising
- Support the Development Manager in the creation and execution of the annual fundraising and development plan.
- Solicit, engage, and steward major donors, including individuals, foundations, and corporations that align with the Real Change mission and programs; participate in face-to-face meetings, telephone calls, site visits, and other tailored approaches.
- As needed, assist and support the Development Manager with special events and other projects.
Organizational Oversight
- Recruit, interview, and directly supervise the Development Manager, Editor, and Operations Director, including conducting check-in meetings and annual evaluations.
- Facilitate weekly Leadership Team meetings.
- Contribute to a positive organizational culture by hearing and valuing staff to attract, keep, and motivate a diverse group.
- Foster a positive, effective, and safe work environment.
- Regular check-ins with the Board of Directors President to review the work plan and organizational progress.
Communications and External Representation
- Regularly engage with donors, volunteers, interns, vendors, staff, and community partners, including nonprofits, program partners, journalism and advocacy partners, and the media.
- Enhance the public profile of Real Change by representing the organization at external events, including community events, public speaking events, interviews, news conferences, networking hours, and other related engagements.
- Maintain a strong knowledge of external news and events that relate to or affect the mission and work of Real Change.
- Contribute to the Real Change newspaper as needed.
- Promote Real Change as a model for street papers and community activism through participation in the International Network of Street Newspapers.
- Oversee consistency of the Real Change brand through the design and development of our communications materials (e.g. brochures, annual reports, appeals, digital media, etc.).
- Develop and maintain relationships with diverse communities, including communities based on shared geography, race or ethnicity, class, and other relevant issues.
Salary and Benefits
The salary range is $100,000 - $110,000, depending on experience. The benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, generous paid time off with three weeks of vacation, two weeks of sick leave, eleven holidays, a 403B Retirement Fund with a 4% Real Change contribution, a flexible work schedule, and professional development funds.
