Do the Right Thing. Tell the State to Help Homeless Kids
- Issue: Because of a court order, the State's Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) and Department of Community, Trade, and Economic Development (DCTED) have come up with a plan to provide services to homeless children in Washington State.
- But their plan would provide only a fraction of the amount needed to comply effectively with the order, says the Washington State Coalition for the Homeless, who brought the original suit. Furthermore, DSHS has drafted legislation that would exempt them from the very mandate to which the court held them accountable.
- Still, parties are hopeful that a compromise can be reached. They are just miles apart right now: DSHS and DCTED propose $5-10 million total funding, while WSCH says that it would take fully $289 million to end the crisis.
- WSCH is proposing that Governor Locke commit $31.1 million in his proposed biennial budget as a reasonable first step towards a real solution to homelessness in the state.
