5 Minute Miracle. Save 1,000,000 Units of Housing Today
- Issue: About one million units of affordable housing stock nationwide are privately owned, and are federally subsidized through the Section 8 housing program. In the last two years, about 100,000 of these units have been lost as owners prepay or opt out of the Section 8 program. Action is needed now to prevent more loss of this valuable housing, which includes 2,000 units in the Seattle area.
- While two legislative proposals have been introduced to protect this housing stock, advocates say that President Clinton's Office of Management and Budget can take additional action to start saving units immediately.
