There i was
hobbling like a concubine
using the handrail
a cane
estimating time, speed, effort
Visiting the library—too strenuous
Shopping for food—equally so
Can't walk since the accident
Running would be tantamount to flight
Forget chores
Smoke pot, watch TV
hoarding energy like the commodity it is
Can't even bend over to pet the cat
Careful getting out of the tub
Can't drink more than two beers a night
might OD, given all the painkillers
Driving to the chiropractor or acupuncturist
i stop at a light
A pitful-looking guy holds out a sign—
No food, no money, no hope
I nearly give him a dollar
before wondering how long
before i fight him for this corner
The light changes
i continue on to my destination
