We would like to express our gratitude to Aaron Burkhalter, Rich Mealey, and Jon Williams for the wonderful cover story on eSe Teatro's ongoing project, the development of Rose Cano's new play, Don Quixote & Sancho Panza Homeless en Seattle (RC, Jan. 3, 2012).
It has been our honor to work with Real Change, Union Gospel Mission, other agencies, and, of course, their clients. Community outreach is an essential part of our theater collective's mission.
We feel it is important to clarify one detail in the article, where mention is made of the actions of "a confused nurse" at the Harborview Emergency Department.
A rather confusing situation was described by us, an issue that is not uncommon, given the enormous challenges of working under pressure with non-English-speaking patients in distress. Language barriers are often compounded by cultural barriers, and the staff members of hospitals and clinics are well aware of this. We would never suggest that a nurse was confused; the meaning in the anecdote which we wished to convey was how these confusing situations can lead to unexpected outcomes.
We have profound respect for the Harborview Emergency Department nurses, who consistently handle difficult situations with great skill and dedication.
