Activists will "occupy" Seattle buses and bus stops April 4 as part of an Occupy National Day of Action for Transit.
The Seattle Transit Riders Union, Occupy Seattle, and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 587 will be protesting in solidarity with transit activists and unions around the nation.
Their message is, "no privatization, no service cuts, no fare hikes, and no excuses," said Katie Wilson, a coordinator with the Seattle Transit Riders Union.
Transit workers and advocates will be spreading the word on buses and trains between 6th and Royal Brougham, near the Metro bus barn, and around Westlake Plaza.
Occupy Boston called the national day of action to protest fare hikes proposed by the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA), Wilson said.
Occupy Boston is working with ATU, the union representing MBTA drivers, to oppose the fare hikes.
ATU asked its other local unions around the nation to join in the action.
Wilson and others founded the Seattle Transit Riders Union in August 2011 amid proposed cuts to Metro bus service.
Many bus riders were not aware of the cuts to Metro proposed over the summer; Wilson and others formed the group to get the word out, she said.
The group is exploring ways to create a special fare for low-income transit riders, and to "progressively raise funding for that," Wilson said.
