A 100-bed shelter opened in First Presbyterian Church Aug. 30. This shelter is not like others.
Operated by Compass Housing Alliance, the “enhanced” shelter will remain open all day, giving residents access to meals, hygiene facilities and case management. Pets are allowed, and there is no hard limit on the number. Storage will be provided.
The shelter is partially funded through a one-time $1.3 million grant from the city. Future funding will be part of the annual budgeting process.
New shelter models such as the one at First Presbyterian allow homeless residents access to the resources that they need to get housing. Shelter operators at First Presbyterian expect that folks will stay between 30 and 90 days, but there’s no formal limit.
