The Homeless do not have doors.
No doors to open, no doors to close.
No doors to keep the cold and rain out.
They have zippered flaps to their tents or no partition at all to their tarps.
Camping is fun when it’s by choice, for a couple of nights, but not for life. Hiking is also fun, but not when you’re being swept by the City and the cops tell you to “take a hike!”
When I was a forest defender of the old growth forests, I felt there was a magic to the deep forest. I imagined instead of cutting down the ancient trees if we could just find the doors at the base of the trees and live inside them. We all would have an eco-home and solve homelessness with the ancients.
I never found that door, so we can’t solve homelessness with magic.
I guess more practical solutions have to solve poverty and homelessness.
Maybe we can turn to the military for solutions? I hear that it only costs the price of a U.S. submarine or destroyer battleship to pay for recovering the entire HUD budget to house everyone.
We all would have a door to open to welcome us home. Choosing which door to open is in our opportunities to decide.
