Hello Real Change Editor,
My name is Regina Gebken and I work at the Grocery Outlet on MLK and Union. I buy my copy of your paper every week from Eddie, who sells papers at the store.
I like spending time doing the crossword with my friends. Often, I find I spend more time working the puzzle than it takes me to read the newspaper!
I am emailing you today to call your attention to the crossword puzzle in the Sept. 8 issue. The puzzle is titled New Money and is written by Patrick “Mac” McIntyre.
The clue for 35 across is “____ lady.” The answer is bag. Bag lady. A cruel and sexist slur that is used to hurt and dehumanize homeless women who have nowhere safe to store their possessions.
Crosswords are powerful because they test the public on their knowledge of what is culturally relevant and appropriate. The public has learned that “bag lady” is a relevant and appropriate term to use.
Real Change has instructed the public that “bag lady” is a relevant and appropriate term to use.
I appreciate the care you give to cover things through a lens of justice and equality for marginalized people in everything you publish. I do not want the crossword to be exempt from these standards.
Please issue an apology for this mistake.
I leave you with these song lyrics:
“Have you seen the old dear who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags
She’s no time for talking, she just keeps right on walking
Carrying her home, in two carrier bags
So how can you tell me you’re lonely
And say for you that the sun don’t shine
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I’ll show you something to make you change your mind”
“Streets of London” by Ralph McTell
