The voices of people experiencing homelessness and poverty are too often left out of stories told in mainstream media. Instead, myths overshadow their experiences.
At Real Change, we do things differently.
In the pages of our paper, you hear from the people most impacted by the housing emergency in our local, independent reporting. Our people-first journalism is powered by the voices at the center of this crisis.
Please donate right now to help us raise $100,000 by March 25.
Real Change enters our new fiscal year on April 1. As we close out our current year’s budget we are behind in our fundraising, and we’re asking for your help to close that gap.
Your gift today provides our community with the resources and opportunities necessary to share their stories through our award-winning journalism.
Bryant Carlin started selling the paper in 2004. While experiencing chronic off-and-on homelessness, his writing and photography kept him connected.
“The story I want to tell is that I held onto a vision,” Carlin said. “I overcame addiction and homelessness to present the life cycle of the Olympic ecosystem.”
Carlin is passionate about wilderness immersion photography. He sees photography as a form of storytelling. His work has been featured on our cover twice in the past two years. The community connected with his work, and his paper sales increased.
Your donation supports our people-first journalism. We rely on individual donations like yours for more than half of our funding. Donate at https://tinyurl.com/RCdonate23.
When we fall short, we have to make up the difference or face program cuts. This fund drive is crucial to guarantee we bridge the gap and start our new year of journalism strong.
“I’m glad that these are stories being told. Once stories are told, where’s the solution? Journalism makes people consider what are the potential options,” Carlin said.
“Real Change gives people a place to start and reconnect with the community. It gives you a base of self worth that you don’t find anywhere else.”
Please join us, if you are in a place to give, by supporting Real Change with a gift of any size right now. We need your support to secure our goal of $100,000 by March 25. Every gift is a gesture of hope for our shared future.
Our people-first journalism is possible because of the supporters who believe in us. Thank you.
