On June 8, 2020, after a week of the Seattle Police Department’s (SPD) dispersals of Black Lives Matter protesters in Capitol Hill, the department changed course and began to leave its East Precinct. While the last officers on bikes pedaled away, a person moved forward from a crowd of protesters into the territory formerly occupied by SPD, between 11th and 12th Avenues on East Pine Street.
