Letter to the Editor: Mornings with Willie

Every workday morning I see Willie Jones at the corner of Aurora and Denny. He is the unofficial start to my workday and is always friendly, polite, talkative and happy. He is never aggressive or rude. I always look forward to talking with him about his jackets, or whatever else we talk about. You could not have a better rep for Real Change than Willie!

Banning smoking in Seattle parks is not about health. If it were, they would ban cars, trucks and buses with their foul exhausts and carcinogenic diesel fumes from being anywhere near parks. I trust barbecuing would also be banned to avoid having to inhale carcinogenic heterocyclic amines (HCA) from meat cooking. These, unlike secondhand smoke, do have scientific evidence to back up the claims of being cancer-inducing.

I wanted to acknowledge Robert Smith who was selling Real Change outside of Elliott Bay Books last Thursday. When I went into the store with my 3-year-old grandson, Mr. Smith gave us a very friendly hello and offered to help me up the stairs with the carriage. I thought, “When I get some change from my purchase, I will buy a paper.” As I was paying for my purchase, the grandson escaped from my husband and ran out the door right toward the street. I’m writing you in regards to your recent feature on the rampant drug abuse in the Pioneer Square/Occidental Park area.

What do you suppose is going to happen to these sick denizens who exist there once the tunnel project is complete and the Alaskan Way Viaduct is demolished and replaced with high-rise waterfront condos and top-shelf apartments? Are they to be relegated to one of the three new tent cities our mayor has recently proposed? Ha, ha! ...

Hungary justified in ban on camping in public places

Hungary’s action regarding camps in certain public spaces (for the provision does not cover ALL public spaces, as the article fails to mention) is perfectly reasonable. (“Hungary’s leaders approve Constitutional amendment to ban people from living in public places,” Real Change, April 10) No one is free to camp out wherever one likes, or ought to be. There are hygiene issues, among others. ...

Females leaders pave the way

A recent Real Change photo showed more than 300 people rallying at Westlake Park to end violence against women and girls (“Hundreds gather for One Billion Rising’s call to end violence against women,” RC, Feb. 20). The Seattle rally was part of One Billion Rising, created by Eve Ensler. Also recently there has been a great deal of attention given to Sheryl Sandberg for championing working women to assert themselves. Then there is Suze Orman, a well-known advocate for women to appreciate and value their own needs. ...

Bill would bring mobile medical services to homeless people

The Mobile Medical Homeless Health Improvement Act of 2013, introduced to the 113th Congress on Jan. 3, 2013, aims to provide medical services to the homeless population. According to the King County Committee to End Homelessness, 8,830 homeless individuals were counted on the Jan. 27, 2012 One Night Count. More than 2,500 individuals were surviving outside without shelter. A mobile medical health care service would be able to reach these men and women who deserve our help. ...

An “F” for the MAP test

I’m writing in response to the [editorial] by Mallory Clarke, “When a test fails the students, it’s time for teachers to boycott the test,” RC, Jan. 30, 2013). I completely agree with Ms. Clarke. My husband and I opted out of the MAP test for our 6-year-old, who is in first grade. And I’m so glad we did. The MAP test is a waste of time for students and teachers alike. The students and teachers have no clue what kind of material is on the test. What kind of cruel trick is that? The only person benefitting from the MAP test is the corporation that sells it.
