The pedagogy of access I read the piece on the LIHI controversy ["The Misrepresentation of Sharon Lee," RC, Oct. 26]. Thank you for some balanced and considered reporting. People who work for LIHI are accustomed to defining procedures and rules for something as basic as affordable housing. We can acknowledge they do good work, while still considering what it means when the "pedagogy of access" is unilaterally defined by the provider: Those who receive benefits have little voice. For once a disgruntled person has resources to amplify his frustration. And what does Ms. Lee do? ...

I am actually from Occupy Olympia so I cannot speak directly to Occupy Seattle, but Sable Verity's Oct. 19 column leaves the impression that the Occupy Together movement is just a bunch of kids sitting around in tents.

We are a instead a cross section of many ages, and we are building networks and picketing banks with leaflets and encouraging their customers to move their money to credit unions. ...

Dear Real Change:

Thank you so much for Being There and doing what you do! I have lived in subsidized housing for 20 years now after being homeless in Seattle for a year in the '80s. I feel so grateful!

Seattle is really on overload with need from Disabled folks. I moved to a much smaller town and got housing pretty easy compared to what I was looking at in Seattle. Over a two year wait (in the '80s) and you can't pick where you go -- pretty scary for a single female. ...

However, I am concerned by the story on a woman's discrimination suit against the YWCA [“Homeless woman protests being barred from shelter,” Dec. 5]. It gives the impression that her improper treatment by shelter staff is proven fact rather than as-yet-unproven allegation. ...

Sex and violence

Dear Real Change:

I’m writing in response to the interview of cartoonist Ellen Forney entitled “Lusty Lady,” [Nov. 7-13]. The article is well-written, lengthy, and has a very good, large photo of Forney as well. But I have a problem with it being in Real Change.

I buy it from a vendor I know somewhat personally. I doubt that she and many other vendors could relate to this article, let alone support it. It’s not relevant to any issues for the homeless, which admittedly are very broad ones, such as war, housing policies in our area, etc. ...

Treating People Like Trash

We were alerted this past summer to increased activity by City personnel in areas with encampments inhabited by people who are homeless. We spoke and met with staff from several city departments, visited encampments, and talked with people directly affected. We were deeply troubled to learn that tents, sleeping bags, and cooking equipment had in some cases been removed or destroyed, while garbage remained. We learned that people received insufficient notice to vacate, and had in at least one case been threatened with arrest when attempting to retrieve personal belongings. ...
