I was excited this morning to discover NASA’s online tracking site for the Artemis moonshot. I’ll be able to sit at the old laptop in my living room and watch all the exciting moments of the (already outdated) robotic rocket’s flight to the moon. It’s as exciting as when I got my Jet Jackson Secret Squadron decoder kit in the mail when I was eight. It’s as exciting as every thrilling, asteroid-hopping episode of “Tom Corbett, Space Cadet” as he battled space smugglers and asteroid belt pirates. ...

We should work to live, not live to work

Burnout is becoming more common among workers in the United States. It’s happening more and more because workers are completely exhausted. Workers are also becoming more resentful and less willing to take on new tasks and “bend over backwards” for their employers. Many employees are “quiet-quitting,” which in my mind is just doing your job and not going above what the company is paying you for. This makes sense, because when I worked at Home Depot, the company would try and make us go the extra mile. Management told us promotions and raises would be in our future if we did. ...

Positivity is a scarce resource in anxious times. The pandemic, climate change and global politics have made it even harder to find.

That hasn’t stopped Real Change vendor Jewel from spreading light.

Jewel started selling with Real Change while unhoused in 2014. A friend of hers at a DESC shelter recommended the paper as a way to support herself because she wasn’t earning any benefits at the time. Since then, Jewel has obtained housing but continues to sell Real Change as a way to earn extra money and interact with the community. ...

Data shows fewer deaths after restrictions on police pursuits

Preliminary data indicates that vehicular deaths caused by police pursuits in Washington state declined by more than 80 percent since a 2021 state law was enacted that restricted when officers could chase suspects in their vehicles.

As of Nov. 3, two people have been killed in police pursuits since HB 1054 came into effect, compared to 11 in a similar 15-month period prior. ...

Mayor Bruce Harrell and Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz announced the creation of a panel of experts on sexual assault that will help address the failure of the Seattle Police Department (SPD) to adequately investigate those crimes and support victims.

The six-member panel includes public health, legal and law enforcement professionals who will work to reform SPD’s internal processes as part of a comprehensive review. Harrell and Diaz also pointed to “unprecedented staffing shortages” as part of the problem. ...

Unionized Seattle Starbucks workers went on strike Nov. 17 to protest unfair labor practices by the company. The baristas joined more than 100 other unionized stores across the country as part of a national “Red Cup Rebellion” day of action, which was scheduled to coincide with the Seattle-based corporation’s launch of its annual festive winter beverage cups.
