In memorium, Ed Bash

Ed Bash was a vendor since April 1998. He sold on Capitol Hill, on 15th near the QFC and Safeway. Ed grew up in Seattle’s Central District, where he attended Madrona Elementary and Meany Jr. High. He graduated from Garrett Hayes High School in Shelton. He went on to become a welder and had an artistic side. He created beautiful wooden clocks from scraped logs and color pencil drawings of flowers. Edward had a great sense of humor.

Real Change Editorial Committee endorsements

One of the longest-running groups working within Real Change is the Editorial Committee, a panel of tireless advisers to the newsroom who critique the paper and suggest story ideas to thew newsroom. At least one member of the committee attends weekly news meetings when the editorial department plans the upcoming issue. The Real Change Editorial Committee is comprised of volunteers, including some who have experienced homelessness. Those who participate are often current or former vendors. ...

Capturing Light: Taking Action

Students, teachers and supporters celebrated Black lives in a rally at Washington Hall on Oct. 19 that featured music, art and discussion about what it means for Black lives to matter in Seattle’s schools.

The event capped a day of activism across the district, in which thousands wore Black Lives Matter T-shirts and led discussions about racism. Performers from the Northwest Tap Connection took to the stage, as did Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett and musician Kimya Dawson. ...

What a fantastic article and photos (RC, “Lost and found,” Aug. 19)! I’ve been staring at the images and have read the article several times now. Kudos to both Rosette Royale and Bryant Carlin on a great piece of journalism. My hope is that Bryant comes back from his six months in Olympic National Park with more great images.

Stop The Hypocrisy

Protesters in Occidental Park saw the hypocrisy of President Obama’s visit to Alaska for the three-day GLACIER Conference on global warming while, at the same time, giving his permission to Shell to drill for oil in the Arctic.

Protesters gathered on Aug. 31 to “March Against Hypocrisy.” The march began at Occidental Park and ended outside the federal building on Second Avenue with a “die-in.” ...

Establishing Roots

The Venerable Pannavati, known as the world's only black Buddhist nun, is coming to Seattle for a weekend of service and education at ROOTS Young Adult Shelter in the University District and NalandaWest in Fremont.

Pannavati started a bakery run by homeless youth in Hendersonville, North Carolina, where she is also co-abbot of Embracing Simplicity Hermitage. She is ordained in Theravada and Mahyana Buddhist traditions and has built a career as a social activist. ...
