Throughout U.S. history, the law and policing have been used as tools of control. For the LGBTQ community, there were a number of laws that put us at the mercy of police abuses. Laws about the kind of clothing you had to wear and laws prohibiting serving alcohol created an environment of police corruption through the exploitation of gay bars and people who frequented gay bars. The police blackmailed the bars and even if money was paid, they would still engage in raids. The raids were routinely filled with violence, including sexual assaults. ...

The Guardian reports Jeff Bezos is scheduled to go into space later this week with his brother and some space tourist who wins an auction. It will be the first crewed flight of Blue Origin’s New Shepard spaceship, which has been tested many times without crews and, I guess, pretty much flies itself. As far as I can tell, this will be the first time a Blue Origin spacecraft has ever had passengers. It’s supposed to happen June 20. ...

“Wake: The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts,” by Rebecca Hall and illustrated by Hugo Martínez, takes its name in part from the ritual of holding a wake when someone has passed away. Often called a “homegoing” in Black Christian circles, wakes are important community affairs meant to hold space for Black bodies in a way that society does not.
